Devuthani (Prabodhini) Ekadashi, Kartika Shukla Ekadashi, is when Lord Vishnu is held to wake from his four-month sleep, ending Chaturmas. Tulsi vivah begins and the wedding season opens. Devotees fast and break the fast (parana) the next day.
How the date is fixed
Smarta: Ekadashi prevailing at sunrise (second day if at two sunrises); parana next day after sunrise and after Hari Vasara, within Pratahkala and before Dwadashi ends.
This is the Smarta (householder) date. Where Ekadashi spans two days, Vaishnavas may fast on the second day.
