Timings vary by city. Every time here is for New Delhi's sunrise, sunset and moonrise; in another city they shift by a few minutes and occasionally the date does too. Dates follow Drik Panchang's Smarta (default) reckoning. Check the Panchang for your own city.

What Amavasya is and how it is observed

Amavasya is the new-moon tithi, the 30th and last tithi of the dark fortnight (Krishna paksha), when the Moon is in conjunction with the Sun and cannot be seen. It is the day of the ancestors (pitru): families offer tarpan and shraddha, feed Brahmins and the poor, give in charity and bathe in holy water. Many people fast and avoid starting anything new.

An Amavasya on a Monday is called Somvati Amavasya and one on a Saturday Shani Amavasya, both given extra weight. The great Amavasyas are Mauni Amavasya, Sarva Pitru Amavasya (the end of Pitru Paksha) and the Amavasya of Diwali.

How the date is fixed

Krishna Amavasya: tithi prevailing at sunrise.

Amavasya is a daytime observance (shraddha and tarpan are done in the day), so the date is the day on which the Amavasya tithi is running at sunrise. The tithi often starts the evening before, so the times in the table can begin on the previous date. Festival Amavasyas follow their own rules - Diwali is fixed by Pradosh, Sarva Pitru Amavasya by Aparahna - and can fall a day away from the date here.
