What Pradosh Vrat is and how it is observed

Pradosh Vrat is the fast of Lord Shiva kept on Trayodashi, the 13th tithi, of both fortnights - so twice a month. Pradosh kaal is the twilight window just after sunset, when Shiva is believed to be most pleased. Devotees fast through the day, bathe, and do Shiva puja in the Pradosh window: abhishek with water, milk and bilva (bel) leaves, a lamp and the Pradosh stotra or Shiva Chalisa. The fast is broken after the puja.

A Pradosh on Monday is Som Pradosh, on Tuesday Bhauma Pradosh and on Saturday Shani Pradosh; the Saturday one is considered especially powerful.

How the date is fixed

Shukla Trayodashi: tithi prevailing in Pradosh kaal (after sunset).

The date is decided in the evening, not at sunrise: the vrat goes to the day on which Trayodashi is running in Pradosh kaal after sunset, so a Trayodashi that starts at noon and ends the next afternoon is kept on the first day. If the tithi touches Pradosh kaal on two evenings, the earlier evening is taken. The puja window in the table starts at sunset in New Delhi, so it moves through the year and from city to city.
