What Purnima is and how it is observed

Purnima is the full-moon tithi, the last (15th) tithi of the bright fortnight (Shukla paksha), when the Moon stands opposite the Sun and shines full. Devotees keep a fast, bathe at dawn (in a river or tirtha where they can), worship Lord Vishnu - Satyanarayan Katha is the usual Purnima puja - and offer arghya to the Moon in the evening. Charity (daan) of food, clothes or money on this day is said to bring multiplied merit.

Some Purnimas are festivals in their own right: Guru Purnima, Sharad Purnima, Kartik Purnima and Buddha Purnima, and Holika Dahan is kept on the Purnima of Phalguna.

How the date is fixed

Shukla Purnima: tithi prevailing at Madhyahna (midday fifth of the day).

Purnima can begin one evening and end the next afternoon, so the day the tithi starts and the day of the vrat can differ. The rule settles it: the vrat goes to the day on which the tithi covers Madhyahna (the middle fifth of the daytime); if it covers Madhyahna on both days, the earlier day is taken. Some traditions use the sunrise tithi for the holy bath and charity instead; the table gives the start and end of the tithi so you can check.
